The most critical aspect of any candle. Trimming the wick to ¼ inch will allow for an even burn and prevent curling or creating soot. When the wick is not maintained, the flame is too large and can pop/spark, potentially becoming a hazard. If this occurs, simply extinguish the flame, let the candle cool and trim the wick.
